Trauma & PTSD

Long-lasting effects of frightening or distressing events. Common reactions, PTSD, and how therapy helps.

Trauma is the effect of going through something very frightening or distressing, such as an accident, violence, abuse or a disaster. Many reactions in the weeks afterwards are normal and ease with time and support.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is when strong reactions carry on for more than a month and get in the way of life.

Common signs

  • Flashbacks or nightmares about the event
  • Avoiding reminders, places or conversations
  • Feeling constantly on guard or easily startled
  • Trouble sleeping or concentrating
  • Feeling numb, guilty or cut off from others

Having some of these does not mean you have trauma & ptsd. Only a qualified professional can make a diagnosis.

When to get help

If reactions are still strong a month after the event, or are affecting work, sleep or relationships, talk to a professional. If you are in danger now, call 112.

What helps

Trauma-focused therapy

Approaches such as trauma-focused CBT and EMDR help the memory feel less raw and less present.

Safety first

Therapy starts with stability: sleep, grounding and feeling safe enough to talk, at your own pace.
